What is DiscoverOrg (discontinued)?

DiscoverOrg was a sales and marketing intelligence tool used by technology vendors, staffing companies and consultants targeting IT, finance, marketing, engineering, technology and product development departments of Fortune-ranked, mid-market, and SMB companies in North America and Europe. DiscoverOrg specialized in mapping out org charts, including verified email addresses, direct-dial phone numbers, reporting structure, new projects and initiatives, and technology installed base.

ZoomInfo Technologies (formerly DiscoverOrg, which acquired and merged with ZoomInfo in 2019 and now operates under the ZoomInfo brand) has since combined all of the capabilities of the DiscoverOrg sales intelligence database into its flagship product, ZoomInfo. Readers interested in the DiscoverOrg database should investigate the ZoomInfo product instead.

In Sales Operations, Marketing, and Sales, we use DiscoverOrg and ZoomInfo to source leads as well as enrich our contacts in both Salesforce and Marketo. Our Sales teams (AE,ADM) use it to build corporate hierarchies and locate new accounts in their territories.
  • Data presentation with the app is organized once you are on the record in question
  • Syncing to Salesforce is easy with a few clicks.
  • Enriching our database on a weekly cadence with filtered queries
  • syncing with Marketo to lookup a contact by email and instantly enriching in Marketo
  • there are some big named accounts that have bad data in ZoomInfo... it's surprising.
  • they have a mechanism for reporting bad data, but there is no feedback at all, if/when they update their database.
It's great for discovering new accounts and contacts at those accounts.
If you are in EMEA, you'll find the data is sparse.
It's a great way to keep your data enriched.

DiscoverOrg was used by my company's business development team. Our main goal of using DiscoverOrg was to help identify account information (financials, addresses, technologies employed, org charts, etc) and specifically identify the key decision makers at these accounts who we want to add to marketing campaigns and include in our one-to-one sales outreach. Most recently, DiscoverOrg has upgraded us to the newest version of the platform, ZoomInfo, but this review is for the legacy platform, DiscoverOrg.
  • Org Charts of companies in the system
  • Contact information is generally correct, and if not, you are able to let the DiscoverOrg team know it needs to be updated.
  • Setting up alerts based on your given criteria.
  • The subscription service model. We only had access to 200 accounts.
  • Integration with our Salesforce CRM seemed to be a little wonky.
  • Account limits. Some of the account we were looking for were very small and not in the platform.
DiscoverOrg is well suited for organizations that have a very defined target list and doesn't need a lot of bells and whistles. My company was capped at 200 accounts, but we were targeting far more than 200 accounts–leaving us with "locked" accounts, having to pay DiscoverOrg to unlock the accounts, etc.

Our Sales team consists of both account executives and business development reps. Our business development reps get lists of customers from AWS that are using AWS Cloud. We then have to run those lists of accounts through DiscoverOrg using the list match feature in order to find contacts at each of those companies to prospect. Using DiscoverOrg over ZoomInfo saves us hours at a time from having to manually look up contacts for those companies.
  • Access to data for small to medium sized organizations.
  • Data quality.
  • Sales intelligence.
  • UI/UX
  • Laggy when rolling out updates
I think for any sales organization the relies on business development to drive new business vs. using traditional marketing DiscoverOrg is the most helpful tool they can use.

DiscoverOrg is being used by our Data Department to jumpstart our lead generation campaign. Our data analyst gets our call list from DiscoverOrg and imports it to our CRM for calling.
  • It helps us getting filmography when sending our leads to clients.
  • Data accuracy
  • The website is very user friendly and filter is really good.
  • With how we use it, I don't see much area of improvement is needed.
If you are in the business of prospecting and doing outbound calls or appointment setting. The service that DiscoverOrg provides is one of the fundamental needs that your company should have. In addition, the value of being able to use the service is very worth it. I am really thankful that we have DiscoverOrg in our company because it helps my job easily.

DiscoverOrg has been a very useful product for us. I've used it at 2 other companies to do everything from territory planning, account mapping, and contact data to enable our sales team to go after the right people at the right accounts. I like the system the only issue I would say is the price. They have bumped the price 3x over the last few years and it really hasn't gotten that much better.
  • Breadth of data
  • Ease of use as an admin
  • Integration to Salesforce
  • Price
  • Support
  • Getting reps to adopt and master it, not easy to do
[It's] kind of the best show in town, however it has gotten really pricey which makes it harder for me to refer people.

In the last 4 years, I've seen DiscoverOrg UI/UX change so much - becoming more and more sophisticated and an easy recommendation at every sales org I join. From small sales org building lists to teams of 100+ creating more targeted account-based lists, DiscoverOrg always has the most verified and diverse data.
  • Most verified TEDD (Technology, Engineering, Design & Development) contacts in the market.
  • Detailed filtering system geared towards sales folks.
  • More marketing contacts.
It is great for:
  • Building sales and marketing databases.
  • Targeting TEDD (Technology, Engineering, Design & Development) contacts; Best platform in the market.
  • Easy and quick integration with SFDC.
  • Super intuitive and helpful CSMs and AMs assigned to your sales team to provide quick tips, sales collateral, and update on outbound sales trends.

Our company uses DiscoverOrg to find contacts and contact info. The Sales Team is able to use these contacts for their prospecting and to see where the contact sits in the org chart. They are also able to see if the account is showing intent around specific keywords important to our business.
  • Accurate contact info
  • Department org charts
  • Overall company org chart missing
  • Limits on exports
This is best for sales and marketing teams that need access to new contacts. This has been a good tool for finding new people to prospect to. Our sales team is able to search for contacts on LinkedIn, then use the DiscoverOrg/LinkedIn Chrome extension to find their contact info.

DiscoverOrg was used within our company as a database to be able to access contact information for different perspective prospects. We used it as almost a "specialty tool," where if we couldn't find contacts with any of our other platforms, we would go to DiscoverOrg to obtain some hard to find information.
  • The data was almost always reliable, even more so than our other platforms (ZoomInfo, LinkedIn).
  • It was fantastic to look at organizational hierarchies. If we found a VP of IT, for example, we could find almost everyone that works under them via a hierarchy view.
  • It wasn't the easiest for new users to learn, but with enough practice, they could use it quite well.
  • There was a weird problem where on occasion if a person had a traditional "First name" as their last name, it would flip it. So someone named "John Allen" would become "Allen John" we ran into this more often than you would think.
We used DiscoverOrg as a "last resort" because we only had 1-2 seats for it in the company. When every other platform failed, we could reliably count on DiscoverOrg to provide us with accurate information that was lacking from our other tools. The database is impressive, and the information was incredibly accurate.

We have DiscoverOrg integrated with our CRM for real-time updates of contact information. We also use DiscoverOrg to list exports for our prospecting efforts.
  • CRM integration (with Salesforce.com).
  • Available for research requests for companies not in the database.
  • Any time application use or segmentation of lists can be made simpler or more intuitive, that's helpful (I've found segmented list pulls challenging at times).
I always recommend it, although the user has to be ready to commit to a sizable expense and the need for a robust data engine.

DiscoverOrg is being used across our BDR team and our Sales team. Finding good data for our target accounts is critical for reaching the people we want to help and for developing a solid pipeline. We find that DiscoverOrg is critical to our tech stack. It truly helps us get the information we need.
  • They organize needed company information really well.
  • The org charts are very helpful.
  • Having more leniency on organizational departments
  • More integration with different apps and softwares
You need DiscoverOrg if you want to enable your SDR, BDR, or sales team to do more research effectively. Finding data and contact info can most times be the bane of every salesperson's existence, but if you have the right tools in place, the process can be a lot more tolerable. DiscoverOrg helps get you the basic information you need to start your stalking journey and even harder to find internal data to give you the edge. If you want to sound like a well researched person on the other end of the phone, then you need DiscoverOrg.

My organization used DiscoverOrg for a search engine to find companies and contacts that were in our field. You can have access to many different levels of an organization, mine mainly used it for HR contacts so we had access to the HR level and C-suite level. This tool was amazing for the sales department because it allowed us to quickly find a list of contacts and companies and filter through them appropriately. DiscoverOrg also integrated with HubSpot which was my favorite part because this allowed me to quickly add the contacts and companies to our CRM without having to manually input them each time. I will say DiscoverOrg is not perfect. They don't always have accurate information and having to pay for each level of the company was annoying because my organization couldn't pay to open all the levels.
  • DisoverOrg does really well integrating with other platforms such as HubSpot CRM. This allowed me to quickly add contacts and companies.
  • DiscoverOrg has great information on each contact and company and sometimes even had a bio on a contact which helps when writing content in an email to that person.
  • DiscoverOrg was very easy to use and had great filters so you were able to find exactly what you needed in a particular area or state.
  • DiscoverOrg's pricing structure is a bit high. You have to pay for each level of a company such as HR level, C-Suite, level and so on which made it difficult to have all the contacts from a company since my organization only had two levels.
  • DiscoverOrg is not perfect. Some of the contact information was very outdated or incorrect which made things difficult at times but that is with any search engine.
Scenarios where DiscoverOrg is well suited: one being when you are trying to find a list of contacts in your territory or state and you need as much contact information on each person as possible, you can either google which would take forever or you can use DiscoverOrg to build a quick list and import those quickly into your CRM.

We use DiscoverOrg to research companies in our ABM focused campaigns and to research enterprise accounts. It is used in the sales department globally.
  • Good data collection.
  • Most data is relevant and frequently updated.
  • News alerts are timely.
  • Very expensive, the price per user amount is not sustainable or realistic.
  • Waiting to see how ZoomInfo integration works.
DiscoverOrg is great for SaaS companies who need quick access to detailed company info and who focus on expertise level accounts. Previously, I would say they aren’t great for some accounts, but with the addition of ZoomInfo into their database, that might not be an issue now.

DiscoverOrg is being used by the Commercial Sales Team at our organization specifically with our Outbound team. This allows them to prospect into different verticals, organizations, and provides them with top of the funnel lead generation. Another use case for DiscoverOrg is that it allows our inbound team to further qualify other members of the organization.
  • DiscoverOrg allows us to quickly download a number of prospects very seamlessly without lagging or wait time, this is essential when working on a lead blitz.
  • DiscoverOrg enables us to further filter through lead lists and apply customized filters to allow you to see the list in your preferred view
  • It allows you to get verified emails and organizational charts which you can count on
  • The UI and UX design of the platform made it very tough to look at on a day to day basis
  • The direct dials were not always accurate
  • The system sometimes crashes when pulling lead lists
DiscoverOrg is a great tool to purchase as a sales leader, as you are building out your outbound team, ensuring that you have an accurate prospecting tool. It is less appropriate when you are looking at an inbound team and they are looking to further prospect into the organizations for members not included in the lead.

I use DiscoverOrg to find new leads for sales. I handle sales in several different areas of my company, and I have to find my own prospects/leads. I use DiscoverOrg to find those leads and contact them, generally via email. It's one of my main sources to find contact company contact information.
  • Very robust and good interface
  • Lots of granular data
  • Tons of companies
  • Payment is by credits, which are based on exporting contacts
  • Could have more information on company financials
  • Not sure if departmental data is always accurate
If you are looking for the most complete database for company contact information, this is probably your best bet, unless you're in a specific industry niche where another product might have more detailed information on that specific industry. But as far as the masses go, DiscoverOrg just has more data than any other, especially since their merging with Zoominfo,.

DiscoverOrg is used by the department only not across the whole organization. We are using DiscoverOrg for Sales and Marketing department. DiscoverOrg is solving business problems of the sales and marketing team for their data and information challenges. Our sales team is completely depending on DiscoverOrg for the cold lead generation and for this we fetch relevant data and information from DiscoverOrg like business email, business phone number, accounts information, contact information and all.
  • DiscoverOrg is very good at account and contacts information. Their detail information are very accurate and relevant. This is the strength of DiscoverOrg.
  • DiscoverOrg is great at providing direct phone numbers of your target contacts with ultimate accuracy, this is also a strength of DiscoverOrg.
  • DiscoverOrg dashboards and reports features are just amazing and very informative. This is also a strength of DiscoverOrg.
  • DiscoverOrg is very expensive, small startups may not able to afford this, so they need to think about it and start providing the solution to those small companies as well.
  • When you need companies having employee size less than 30, DiscoverOrg will fail you, yes DiscoverOrg does not have a very huge amount of data for small and funded startups, this is the area where I think they must improve.
  • DiscoverOrg is good at providing technology stack of a particular internet product companies but not great I say, because when I want technology stack of small companies like 30 to 50 employee size, DiscoverOrg not able to give a great result.
Well suited:- DiscoverOrg is well suited when your target accounts employee size is more than 60, they will give you every relevant information like technology stack, new initiatives and in contacts, they will give you business emails and direct numbers.
Less appropriate:- when your target accounts employee size is less than 30 and funded startups, in this area DiscoverOrg is less appropriate.

DiscoverOrg is used by my organization for better contact information within accounts, insight into organization changes and alerts when companies are possibly in the market for new technology.
  • Integration with Salesforce: very easy to automate the adding of new or unlisted accounts.
  • Subscription services: sends daily alerts on changes within organizations of interest.
  • Updating account information (new employees, number of employees, change of address, etc.).
  • Contact information within accounts is sometimes very outdated or minimal.
  • Opportunity Alerts: many times when companies are "surging" on a particular topic or area of interest it is after they have already completed an evaluation.
Sales prospecting: finding contact information for executive level personnel/decision makers within the organization.

The entire organization I work for uses Discover.org and it is mostly used to obtain information for business development, occasionally to acquire information on possible candidates. It is available to all employees whether they are working as a recruiter, an account manager or a full desk employee. We are also utilizing it for national accounts, contract, contract-to-hire, and direct hire verticals.
  • It quickly slows you to see whether it is going to have access to what you are looking for or not, so at least a lot of time is not wasted.
  • The search feature in being able to type in a company name or individual name is nice because it might still pull someone up from a previous company and there might still be a cell number provided.
  • The sort feature with data is nice in being able to sort by name, title, etc
  • The information provided is very hit or miss and often times inaccurate.
  • Titles listed in discover.org are usually not the same as titles on individuals LinkedIn.
  • Sometimes it is so fast to pull a company up while you are searching and it is nowhere near the company you wanted.
I have tried multiple programs and Discover.org is by far my least favorite. Now, this could be the version my company has purchased, however more times than not it comes back not being able to show the information I requested or it does not have it. Discover.org is well suited to give you a great visual snapshot of a company, including revenue and employee size, org chart -- etc.

Right now, DiscoverOrg is being used for a portion of our prospecting efforts inside of the sales, business development, and channel sales departments. We use it in conjunction with some other tools as well.
  • Provides detailed overviews on specific organizations
  • Keeps updated records in its system
  • Is very user friendly
  • I'm not a fan of how they lock certain departments for purchase
  • Their business model isn't as appealing to me as other tools
DiscoverOrg is well suited for helping my team and I pull lists. It seems that it is best used when other tools are working in conjunction with it.

DiscoverOrg is being used by a good portion of our Sales Organization.
  • Org Charts.
  • Scoops.
  • Triggers.
  • Finding Emails and Phone numbers.
  • Contact information is sometimes out of date.
  • The "scoops" that you set up could include more detailed information.
  • Updated information (compared to LinkedIn) could be better.
I would recommend for any salesperson - hunter, farmer, or both. For those who are "hunting" new customers, DiscoverOrg is invaluable. If you use it right and take the time to set up your scoops, you will have information that will help you find new customers and will give you triggers to use so they know that you have done your homework and researched them before calling them. It also helps you to know the organization's management chart so you know the decision-makers and those that can help move your sales process forward.

DiscoverOrg is being used across the entire company in order to find leads for our sales teams. It allows us to see the structure of an organization and effectively target prospects that would gain the most value from our product. It simplifies the need to do multiple Google searches and helps find data that may not be accessible otherwise.
  • Contact info, including where individuals sit in the company hierarchy and where there HQ is.
  • Reliable numbers and position titles.
  • A streamlined interface that allows for import directly to your CRM.
  • Though they have a lot of contacts, more would add value.
  • Ability to upload as prospects into tools such as Outreach.
Sales is where it is most appropriate. Great way to find the contact info for prospects and company data. It might not be the greatest tool if you are a candy shop who sells to a younger demographic or if you are extremely introverted and wouldn't like to talk to or meet people (unless your boss needs the info; then it's extremely useful).

DiscoverOrg is being used by our entire sales department. We use it for multiple purposes. First and foremost for researching department hierarchy and obtaining lead information. We also rely on DiscoverOrg as our source of truth for territory determination, company size, and subsidiary hierarchy. This makes it easy to solve any conflicts between reps and territories before they turn ugly.
  • Overall accurate contact info for leads, both at a high level and day-to-day level within the company being targeted.
  • Great org chart showing the chain of command and who each person reports to.
  • Scoops are pretty accurate, and can confirm suspicions of new projects that are starting up.
  • Scoops could be reported quicker
  • Data could always be more accurate. It's not bad, but could always be cleaned out a little more thoroughly.
  • Org charts could be a little easier to understand as far as what department each individual's role ultimately falls to on an executive level.
It is well suited for larger enterprise organizations. They have a lot of leads and most have accurate contact info you cannot find online. It is also a good resource for general company information such as corporate phone number, company size, headquarters address.
Smaller companies are lacking in leads some of the times. Scoops are really nice, but I definitely wouldn't buy this if that is your main driving factor.

DiscoverOrg is our primary tool used to find qualified prospects for the sales team within territory accounts. It is used across the sales department and provides us with accurate information about organization hierarchy and contact methods. It saves us an incredible amount of time spent researching accounts and employees for the companies that we work with.
  • ACCURATE DATA
  • Easy to use
  • Quickly export to Salesforce
  • Research support
  • SMB businesses don't have as accurate of data
  • At times, some contact information is locked even if they are in a department that we have access to
  • No notifications when an exported contact has changed organizations
They are excellent at providing accurate data compared to their competitors. I can trust that 90% of the time when I use a contact's information from DiscoverOrg that the email will not bounce or call get routed to a different employee. They also have an excellent research team that will find information at the request of users.

DiscoverOrg is used by the majority of my company for prospecting. It's nice to have direct contact information for potential clients. I really like the description of the company and job titles DiscoverOrg offers. Displaying the hierarchy within the company is also very useful.
  • DiscoverOrg displays the last updated date for each contact, which is very helpful.
  • Pulling contacts into a CRM is extremely easy with DiscoverOrg. I personally use the Chrome extension to pull contacts and companies into Salesforce. It's extremely easy to research prospects via LinkedIn and pull them into Salesforce all through this extension.
  • If you find any incorrect information for a contact or company, it is easy to send in a "fix-it" request. The DiscoverOrg team will contact you when the mistake is resolved, as well as offer more information on the contact or company. The follow-up of the DiscoverOrg team is amazing.
  • I will find a company title that is incorrect, but this is very rare. I have found maybe five mistakes in the names of the hundreds of companies I have researched.
DisoverOrg is ideal for prospecting.
