We use Avalara to both calculate the sales tax liabilities and to file sales tax returns. Doing it ourselves would be very cumbersome and time consuming. Avalara is also very reasonably priced for the service.

We are currently using return filing with Avalara. The data is pulled after the first of the month and then compiled for filing to the appropriate authorities. Currently we are is almost all states which is labor intensive and not feasible to have staff prepare and file these returns.

CertCapture (i.e. exemption certificate management) is okay. It's a pain in the butt to set up, and they are not helpful. You'll have to manually upload/associated and validate each and every certificate with each and every customer. Have fun with that.

We looked at Sovos pretty hard but came to the conclusion that they are geared for larger companies and were very expensive. When we contacted Avalara, their software and price structure seems to be in line with what we were looking for so we went with them, a decision I do not regret.

On this in regards to Avalara, I would need to wait to see a bit as both instances the ERP was SAP, and we are in the process of implementing SAP to Avalara. So I cannot compare those at this time. I [can't] compare my use of ONESOURCE/SAP to Avalara/NetSuite +Salesforce, as I didn't have control of the ONESOURCE/SAP on the level I do with Avalara/NetSuite +Salesforce. In my current use of Avalara, I have found that I can control a lot of issues prior to them being an issue, as long as I know of it before the month closes, and some even after the month closes.
