Unfortunately, we implemented Avalara when they were a very young company so implementation was a bit haphazard, not to mention the integration connector was not fully fleshed out. To Avalara's credit, their team worked with us to get things correct as needed. Recent dealings have been positive and their growth has lent them the ability to streamline their product and processes.

I am hearing of better implementations now. Initially it was rough, because of the limited experience and difficulty understanding how we previously calculated sales tax. There have been growing pains, but it has now stabilized and been very good.

The rating of a 6 was not because I was displeased with Avalara's service or implementation team. The implementation process and implementation team were great. The issue I had with implementation was finding the time of an implementation specialist to devote to our account. With the fast growth of Avalara, my specialist always felt rushed which made me feel I did not get adequate time or support.

I just thought our implementation specialist wasn't nice. She was very knowledgeable and helped us out. She just wasn't friendly. We are new to the Avalara family and we have simplistic questions that we wanted to ask but didn't feel comfortable asking. I do believe the ease of use is a plus with Avalara.

Over the last two years, Avalara has greatly improved its implementations and communications with my clients. Initially, the clients were frustrated with the hands-off approach, but I think that better communication around that has made a big difference. They have also made more of an effort to include the ERP reseller of the client, who often has a better understanding of how the client uses the software.

Professional services techs are difficult to schedule. They are hurried because they don't have flexibility if the session runs long. We were frequently scheduling additional sessions and the setup took much longer than anticipated.

We implemented before the new product catalog product. I think implementation would have been much easier if this had been available then. We were able to recreate something that assimilated our historic rates, otherwise, the implementation would have been painful.

I gave it a 7 because our e-commerce integration was smooth and easy -- we loved it! I would rate that a 10. However, integrating with our ERP system was much more challenging. Tons of staff were needed to test and implement. There were lots of problems that popped up. Dealing with the third-party implementation team was super knowledgable, but it was tough to navigate all the people needed to communicate with!

They need live people to answer questions -- we just keep getting links sent for knowledge-base articles or webinars and no real resource to answer questions. We still have implemented returns processing because we can't get someone to discuss the POA requirements. It has been less than stellar implementation, but since we are on Eclipse for our business application we feel there is no other option.
