What is ScienceLogic SL1?

The ScienceLogic SL1 platform aims to enable companies to digitally transform themselves by removing the difficulty of managing complex, distributed IT services. SL1 uses patented discovery techniques to find everything in a network, so users get visibility across all technologies and vendors running anywhere in data centers or clouds. The vendor states the advantage of SL1 is that it collects and analyzes millions of data points across an IT universe (made up of infrastructure, network, applications, and business services), to help users make sense of it all, share data, and automate IT processes.

With SL1, the user can:

  • See everything across cloud and distributed architectures. Discover all IT components—–across physical, virtual, and cloud. Collect, merge, and store a variety of data in a clean, normalized data lake.
  • Contextualize data through relationship mapping and machine learning (ML) for actionable insights. Use this context to understand the impact of infrastructure and applications on business service health and risk, accelerate root cause analysis, and execute recommended actions.
  • Act on data that is shared across technologies and IT ecosystem in real time. Apply multi-directional integrations to automate workflows at cloud scale.

ScienceLogic - Thumbs Up

ScienceLogic is up on the front edge of today's technology. It has good customer support and good products. We heard ScienceLogic also has Powersync and PowerMap etc., which could be a great help in our business. In today's complex world, a better centralized monitoring tool would save us a lot.

Zenoss didn't offer the flexible scaling that ScienceLogic offered. This was a huge need for us. Additionally, ScienceLogic is able to do more and go more in-depth overall. When comparing ScienceLogic to Nagios the word "simplicity" jumps out. Though Nagios was scalable, it was in-efficient, complicated to learn and clunky. ScienceLogic is more intuitive and business-friendly overall.

We use two monitoring systems in our environment for the sake of redundancy and cross-checking. That said, we have seen that Sciencelogic occupies a unique space in the market. Its primary competition in our use case was SolarWinds NPM, and Whatsupgold. We found it could produce polished-looking results even better than SolarWinds while being nearly as customizable as WhatsUp Gold. While we eventually settled on using 2 of the 3 we heavily tested, we found Sciencelogic's graphing and customization to be indispensable, even if ease of use was lacking at times.

ScienceLogic is garbage compared to the competition. We only went with it cause it was cheap and we had to have a system.

ScienceLogic is more feature rich and relatively easy to get into. For example, it is far superior to OpManager and PRTG in terms of features and capabilities. It is much easier to pick up compared to Zabbix. To enjoy a lot of function/features of ScienceLogic, you don't need to do a lot of training. However, it costs a lot more than any of these and probably a little bit intensive on the resource requirement side.

Nagios has a simple interface which can be used for a handful of devices, but not the entire networking infrastructure. Whereas ScienceLogic can be used to monitor the entire infrastructure to quite a high level, so that we can make sure that the infra is highly available and stable.

Enterprise Monitor, own developed tool by current organization, It was an old tool and has its own limitation. Even limitation for add on features. So organization needed new tool with flexibility of integration with existing environment. Science Logic tool met the expectation and so it is with us now as our primary tool.

ScienceLogic is decades behind these other products I have used and tested. If management will listen to me, we will not have ScienceLogic after the contract end date.

We liked the cloud-based implementation of Datadog, but pricing didn't stack up. We also use LabTech to complement missing features in Sciencelogic.

In general EM7 stacks up well to other commercial products and open source products. Personally I have worked with well over 25 or 30 different monitoring products (probably 50 if you include product evaluations) and would rate EM7 around the top 75% as it applies to features and capabilities, but there are a few products I have worked with or evaluated that exceed EM7. Examples are EMC Smarts and the Managed Engine suite of products.

The only other product that I used is Cisco TMS which I still use but not much for monitoring now. ScienceLogic allows me to monitor issues for multiple customers in one area and this saves me time every day for other tasks. The reporting feature is also easy to use and provides a more detailed and presentable look for the customer.

We chose ScienceLogic over PRTG due to:
  • The ability to handle multiple clients in the same instance.
  • The ability to scale to a very larger number of monitored devices.
  • The ability to be customized to monitor all kinds of device types.
  • The ability to do advanced reporting of metrics.
  • Having an open and extensive API.
  • The ease of management of the system itself w. regards to patching/upgrades and change in configurations.
