We use it to send a newsletter and manage subscribers.
Now that it is owned by Intuit I really can't recommend it for any scenario. In my opinion, it seems most popular among those who lack technical skills and go for the easy option.

We are trying to transition to using SMS and MMS for one of our client's. I have reached out via Mailchimp chat for over 3 days to get pricing and the application processed. I have been promised for 3 days that someone would email me because the sale people on the chat cannot handle SMS communication. I had already filled out the SMS application and it is now 4 days later and no communication from them via email. I have checked spam nothing there either. I have received emails that they will contact me also and still NOTHING!!! I guess additional business and money is something they do not want. They certainly do not seem to care about customer service. Will have to find a new service to use. Your loss Mailchimp. You might want to consider hiring sales reps that do want to make sales.

No thank you. I am not happy with them. Not going to give positives when I have nothing but negatives.

I am a struggling artist who just became a client of ASF (Art Storefronts), which provides marketing coaching and a website designed for artists. ASF is integrated with Mailchimp, so we are directed to create a Mailchimp account. Literally, the second I created an account, I was notified that my account was suspended for violation of terms. In my correspondence with them (there is no phone support for free accounts), they requested a government ID to be submitted via a Google form so they could investigate. In my experience, they give NO timeline and NO specific reason my account was suspended. I feel I might as well be talking to their chatbot. It has been over 3 days since I submitted proof that I am who I am, while in the meantime, the completion of my website has been delayed; hence there is no QR code to give to new contacts at the live shows I am doing these coming months. I would gladly use another email marketing provider like Mailerlite (who actually responded immediately to my inquiries and seemed customer-centered), but if I do, then the auto-sync of my contacts into outgoing emails will be disabled due to ASF's integration with Mailchimp. In my experience, Mailchimp is NOT customer-centered.
  • They have a website
  • In my experience, care about your customers
  • In my experience, answer customer questions
I never got the opportunity to speak to how well Mailchimp works since they suspended my account upon creation of it, without, in my experience, giving me a specific reason or a timeline as to when I would they would fix it. So, unfortunately, I cannot give any example of when they would be well-suited.

It is used as a newsletter marketing tool to send dedicated emails to clients.
  • [I believe] Mailchimp doesn't do anything particularly well.
  • [in my opinion,] Mailchimp could improve on basically everything. I think it's seriously complicated to use.
  • In my experience, the tagging facility doesn't appear to work and all my imported contacts were tagged multiple times with multiple different tags. I feel that the remove tag options are limited and selecting an audience based on the tags is virtually impossible.
  • I believe it should be simple to send one client an email, but with Mailchimp, I would spend two to three hours trying to figure out how to send one person one email because the categories, audience, and tagging are just faulty and awkward. In the end, I usually give up and phone the client, which is probably better, but, geez, it's a pain in my opinion.
  • The silly icons that you have to use instead of words could be improved because you don't know what icon means what and getting from one section to another makes no sense in my opinion.
  • Now, I understand why emails I receive from others who use Mailchimp usually look average. In my opinion, it's because it's a dog of a system.
[In my experience,] it is difficult to use and makes no sense in the way it's laid out. I believe there is nothing intuitive or easy about it and the help guides are useless and don't seem to work in my opinion.

In my experience, it was used for email marketing, but, hopefully, not anymore. In my opinion, my first experience using Mailchimp was dreadful.

Personally, I really can't think of why people will use Mailchimp over other products like Hubspot. During my experience, I struggled to create and send a fairly simple email campaign (on an account my colleague is paying $300/mo for) when moving to Hubspot simply solved the whole issue. In my opinion, you can do much more effective email campaigns on Hubspot for a much less starter price...

MailChimp is a Chump

A year after I wrote the worst review possible of this terrible company, they have the nerve to try to bribe me with $25 to revise my review. Ok - here is my revision: MailChimp is the absolute worst mail system I ever tried and I will never ever ever use it again. I use Vertical Response and encourage everyone to try VR because it's cheaper and better in every way. MailChimp overcharged me, blocked my entire list and caused me to miss an important campaign. Why? No reason - my valid email list was simply blocked by their system and they have no customer service to help. The worst mail system ever and I will never use it again. MailChimp cost my company valuable time and using MailChimp led directly to a loss in revenue. Never, ever again and I hope MailChimp goes out of business - today! Bye!
  • They tried to bribe me for a good review - really bad form Mailchimp - I hate you!
  • They avoid any and all contact with their customers really well
  • They put systems in place to protect themselves and make your life difficult
  • Opt in email requires a phone number. However, MailChimp has no phone support. Fail.
  • They block valid opt in email addresses with no recourse to unblock them other than sending their email to MY recipients to reconfirm something they already did. No - you don't get to contact my customers to reconfirm.
  • Overpriced for what they offer. Total waste of money for what I got, especially since they blocked thousands of valid emails on my opt in list.
If you read good reviews of MailChimp, know that they pay people to write their reviews. I am being paid $25 for this review. I will never use MailChimp again. Their service had a direct negative impact on my business. The fact that they have to pay for reviews proves how bad they really are. Don't use Mailchimp. They are chumps.

We use MailChimp for targeted mailings to select customer/user groups, batched by region and product. It's effective in this narrow range - targeted mailings. We also store email lists in MailChimp because in part we do not have an integration with Salesforce, though that's on the horizon for us. As a basic email marketing solution, MailChimp is easy to use, straightforward and simple requiring little training for our regional marketing managers, corporate administrator and others who use the solution.
  • Page templates are easy to design and implement.
  • Subscribe forms are likewise simple to modify and implement.
  • Support is ok. MailChimp is very responsive on simple use questions submitted through the online help desk.
  • MailChimp's double opt-in procedure is annoying and often creates extra work for developers. Furthermore, you cannot turn this off. On the backend you are constantly seeing notifications from MailChimp advising that your email might be 'spammy'. There is no spam check feature so you are really guessing as to whether MailChimp will flag a message as spammy.
  • MailChimp's biggest disappointment thus far is its mobile webform builder. Dubbed MailChimp Subscribe, it's a downloadable app for tablets and smartphones. Sadly, it has the same problems as MailChimp's desktop version - double opt-in rules are annoying and time-consuming from a user or especially admin perspective.
  • MailChimp does not address the multitude of webform uses that are out there. The system assumes that you are sending out an email, newsletter or other broadside blast. Embedding a form into a web page is limiting, annoying and time consuming especially if you use their native Embedded Form feature. This limits out of the box design features (unless you want to hardcode the whole thing).

It's useful for basic email design and distribution if your needs are fairly straightforward. Limited design choices and lack of a dynamic editor constrain you to using the limited tool box of pre-designed forms, templates and other tools. Full customization is only possible by using the hardcode feature.

It is not a good choice if you are embedding webforms into web pages, or if you need a mobile form for tradeshow lead capture - the process to use the latter is slow, painful and rife with all sorts of problems that cause the average user to say 'forget it'.

MailChimp automation features are limited but within the scope of its basic design parameters - a simple to use outbound marketing tool with limited out of the box design choices.

I use mailchimp as our way of attracting new customers. It helps to solve our marketing problems.
  • Mailchimp is good at providing tools for measuring your performance
  • It does provide regular feedback as to how many emails are being opened
  • It has a very good tool for inserting and editing pictures
  • They clearly don't understand how to create teaching materials; they are confusing and vague at best. Both the videos and the written material are very poorly designed. Probably the worst aspect of Mailchimp and the reason why many of my colleagues have been evaluating other Autoresponders.
  • On a scale of 1-10 its usability rating is 1 because there are so many things going on behind the simple easy-to-use interface that are hidden and difficult to find and change. Anything to do with the forms is very poorly designed and not so intuitive.
  • The link between campaigns, lists and automation is confusing and doesn't make sense. Why does the campaign dropdown even exist? If it's a broadcast email why not use some simple language. It seems to me that simplicity is not a concept they've come across as yet. Except for their user interface but then it hides the complexity and difficulty of using the software.
  • Its system of writing emails is very clunky. On one side you write the email and on the other side the text appears. It is the only email autoresponder that does this. It is well behind the competition in this regard
  • Creating sub-segments is a nightmare when you want to creat a short introductory course and move people into another segment
  • When sending out emails you only have the option to send out emails within a certain time range. Even when you're testing your own emails it can take up to 20 mins to receive your test email.
  • The sending aspect of the autoresponder is unreliable. I"ve received emails at all sorts of times. You cannot predict within one hour when emails are to be sent out. As a power user of AR you need your emails to go out at a precise time not when it suits mailchimp.
If you are considering using mailchimp the question you should ask is how simple is it to use. The effectiveness and usefulness of the training material leaves a lot to be desired. On this basis alone it is a terrible mail service.
