What is Zapier?

The Zapier Automation Platform is a platform designed to integrate data between web applications. Zapier automates the communication between apps by relying on “Triggers” within apps to catalyze pre-arranged actions, such as data formatting, and transfers of data between apps. The program featured pre-designed connections for more than 1,500 apps. It is scaled for small to mid-sized businesses and features a free version with limited connector complexity and quantities.

Zapier's goal is to enable automation for any process, allowing users to visualize and build advanced workflows with custom logic, conditions, and filters, with no code needed. Some features include:

  • Multi-step Zaps - Zaps that automate several tasks at once.
  • Paths - Zaps that perform different actions based on if/then logic.
  • Filters - These ensure Zaps run only when certain conditions are met.
  • Schedule - Zaps can be set to run whenever it's right for the process.
  • Formatter - Used to transform dates, currency, text, and more into any preferred format.
  • Webhooks - Can receive data from any service or send requests to URLs—without writing code or running servers.

Zapier's no-code automations include with 6,000+ app integrations from partners like Google, Salesforce, and Microsoft so users can collaborate across departments.

Better range of integrations. Easier workflow building.
More B2B focus than IFTTT and faster time from trigger to action.
The Zapier utilities like formatter and data storage also have become a big differentiator for us - they've evolved since we started using but have become highly valuable.

Zapier versus IFTTT, in my opinion Zapier was much easier to get up and running faster without a lot of deep technical background especially with their zap making tool. Other API programs I have looked into had a higher cost, so that also made an impact with trying Zapier. We also looked at hiring outside developers to come in and build them on opensource/build them from scratch and that was too much of a hassle. We haven't looked too much into alternatives because they are such a good price, easy to use and their support is very helpful.

PieSync is historical real-time 2-way syncing. It doesn't get any better than that. However, Zapier has way more connectors, so there is a place for both. Workato looked robust, but was really lacking on triggers and actions, and it cost more than Zapier and PieSync combined. Useless.

It has been a while since I looked at IFTTT, but I recall that Zapier was easier to use, more powerful and had more integrations. I started using Zapier and never looked back. The free version allowed me to build a couple of simple integrations and test it out. I used it for months before becoming a paying customer.

I looked at a few other solutions (Hoist, Parabola 2.0, and Tray.io) but it was evident right away that there wasn't any other product on the market right now that had as much to offer me as Zapier. Zapier is much further in their development than their competitors right now and that was the reason I stopped looking around.

I don't know of anything else that does what zapier does. Some people compare IFTTT but that's like comparing a laptop to an abacus. (zapier is the laptop and IFTTT the abacus). Zapier is fantastic, and the pricing also means you pay little when you use it little, and pay more when you use it more, but not ridiculously more.

They are more or less the same in terms of functionality but I think the overall Zapier company ethos sets it above IFTTT and the developer community around Zapier shows a deeper commitment towards its innovative expansion. Beyond that, one could literally use both in their environment and more or less achieve the same result.

  • BreezingForms
We now use BreezingForms and manually enter our leads into HubSpot until we are able to find another tool that has the capabilities of Zapier but actually works correctly and doesn't constantly break on us. It has been a challenge for our company to find another tool with the capabilities of Zapier.

Zapier beats IFTTT for the shear customization and flexibility it has. If you want something simple, like IFTTT, Zapier can do that – no problem. But if you want complexity like running scripts on data points, converting time/date formats, multi-step zaps ("recipes" in IFTTT,) etc., then you need to implement Zapier into your workflow.

Although IFTTT was the original web services connector, I have always felt that Zapier bested them with their preset templates. Zapier also connected more business web services than IFTTT when I signed up for Zapier. The product that Zapier delivered has always felt more polished and professional. While I might consider using IFTTT for personal use, Zapier is clearly the professional/business offering for us!

I have evaluated Zapier [compared] to Workato. Zapier seemed easier to connect systems together. They also have a larger selection of integrated platforms. Workato has no free option, and getting their "recipes" (integrations) set up required a great deal of trouble shooting and email with their support team. Overall, Zapier is easier to use, if they can integrate with the platform you are looking for.

On the surface it is easy to group IFTTT and Zapier together because they both make it possible to connect web applications together through a simple interface. But Zapier is a much more powerful business tool, better suited for connecting information platforms and data. IFTTT works well for home automation or individual users, but Zapier is better suited for most business needs.

Zapier integrates with many more apps than IFTTT and I find it does not have as many glitches. For some reason, not all my "applets" in IFTTT would work all the time, whereas with Zapier I have not run into the same issue. If you are a business, invest in Zapier over IFTTT to make sure all those processes run smoothly.

I love Zapier, but have also been an avid user of IFTTT. One thing i do enjoy about IFTTT is its price structure. Meaning it is free. Zapier charges after you have created so many ZAPS but IFTTT does not. Zapier does have much more functionality which i do like quite a bit.

Zapier is the only product in its category that I know of. IFTTT comes close but is more personal in nature. Zapier definitely has a huge head start because of the many companies that have actively built out and maintained their Zapier connections. Any other app would have to catch up.
