What is Smartlook?

Smartlook is an analytics solution tool for websites, iOS/Android apps, and various app frameworks, that answers the "whys" behind users' actions. It helps users understand precisely how customers interact with website and app — watch recordings, create heatmaps, use automatic tracked events, and build conversion funnels. Data is seen on one central dashboard, which enables sharing and collaborating with colleagues. This is to support clear, data-driven decision-making for product managers, marketers, UX designers and developers, and help them improve each website and app by reducing churn rates, boosting conversions, identifying and fixing bugs, and improving UX.

Smartlook offers the ability to record users’ behavior in Unity games. The vendor states clients include Madfinger Games, MobilityWare, and Awesome Prototype.

Smartlook started in 2016 and currently boasts more than 2,800 paying organizations across the globe including companies like Paxful, Sky, Volvo, Vogue, Papa Johns, Miele, and Livestorm.

We use Smartlook to understand the needs of our customers and follow the customer purchase journey in the most efficient way possible. It allows us to quickly understand the good and the bad parts of the purchase process. Using complex funnels and comprehensive insights, we can quickly provide valuable metrics alongside new releases and adjust parameters wherever necessary. We have deployed it on every page of our website, allowing us to collect real-time user experiences and monitor the way users react to changes almost instantly.
  • Funnels are both easy to configure yet comprehensive enough to detect complicated customer journeys.
  • Real-time recording provides exceptional insights to our design & engineering teams.
  • Session recording is surprisingly lightweight and seems to cause no substantial performance degradation for our customers.
  • Heatmaps are quite simplistic in nature and compared to other tools, rather poorly generated.
  • Certain parts of the admin console look less polished, especially around the settings and control area.
Smartlook seems to be a rather robust software, both easy to configure and deploy even on complex setups. It can be used to quickly collect and monitor customer sessions with almost zero configuration. I'd recommend special care where performance is a crucial factor as there is a small performance impact when enabling this in production. Low-powered devices, Chromebooks and other clients with limited resources are disproportionately affected.

Smartlook is a great tool to understand our customers and users. I use it specifically for two use cases:
  1. To understand their journey through our app which gives me great insight into where my product needs to be improved for better UX.
  2. To see where they experience issues or where actual errors in our app or API occurred which I can then debug really nicely given all the content from the user journey.
  • Capture the user journey.
  • Events, filters; these are a bit confusing.
Perfect for web apps, specifically ones where users interact a lot. We can drive great analytics from watching the users' behavior and make improvements based on that which in turn not only make for better UX but also for more overall sales. Afaik it's not suited for mobile apps unfortunately, although that'd be great as well!

We use Smartlook in multiple ways. First, we use it to analyze customer journey - from landing page - to browsing - to conversion. This is highly valuable as we can see what's the best performing path and what content our users/visitors are interested in. Second, we use Smartlook to catch errors on our website. This is crucial as we're constantly on the lookout if our forms are working and everything is ok. Third, we use Smartlook to evaluate tests we're running on the landing pages or website. And fourth, which is a bit generalized, we use it to visualize how users navigate the website whilst we're testing some hypotheses or just looking for answers to some questions.
  • Tracking events - extremely well implemented.
  • Funnels.
  • Session recordings + filters = an amazing combo.
  • Advanced event tracking.
  • Stability and preciseness can be always improved.
  • Reporting.
  • Data export.
Smartlook is perfect if you want to see how your visitors engage with the content. How their journey looks and what makes them stay or leave the website.

We use Smartlook on our own website and across our client's websites to monitor their user's browsing trends and allow us to identify any bottlenecks and room for improvement in conversion rate. The software is used primarily in our marketing team, but the developers often join in with analysis meetings to discuss and implement solutions.
  • Heat mapping.
  • Screen recording.
  • Conversion recording (form fills).
  • One shortcoming (made worse by GDPR) is that of data sharing to other tracking software.
It's well suited to large and medium/large businesses who have invested in some time and resources to analyse their website user behavior properly. Like many analytics tools, the information is quite in-depth and many smaller companies do not have the time to inspect it properly and/or to understand and implement the required changes to their website.

We use this to monitor our main website as well as our web application. This enables us to firstly determine visitor behavior on our main site which enables us to improve our site which in turn leads to more/better customer acquisitions. For our web application, this helps us to monitor user behavior in order for us to optimize our application to deliver a better user experience. It also allows us to troubleshoot errors on the site.
  • User tracking & behavior.
  • User segmentation.
  • Code base at time of user action.
  • Maybe a better interface for switching between sites/organizations.
  • Better integrations with 3rd Party application.
  • Clutching at straws for problems so I guess I'll say maybe a little cheaper.
This is great if you want to track user behavior linked with user data from your application i.e. You can track users on Smartlook with your client's username, email, user ID, and any other fields that you find important. Tracking website visitors to better optimize your website/marketing and overall client acquisition rates.

It is being used by the marketing team in order to demonstrate ROI when deploying new collateral across the website and measuring how old collateral is performing across the website. The whole organization uses this information to decide what we need to improve and areas that are performing well. It's invaluable when determining what prospects are doing on our site and what information they are consuming.
  • Journey mapping.
  • Prospect insights.
  • Conversion rate optimization.
  • I think single customer journeys need more work.
  • Prospect logging and filtering.
  • Folders to decide where prospects can go.
  • Filters to weed out bots.
Ecommerce sites or lead generation sites will benefit from Smartlook, but that's not the only place where you can use them. If you want to test a new website design or just get a glimpse into what people are doing on your site, this is a perfect tool [that] isn't expensive.

Smartlook is being used in order to identify customer pain points or glitches they may experience when using our platform. When a customer reports an issue, we use Smartlook to verify the issue and identify how the issue has occurred so that we can find the best way to fix and resolve [it].
  • Provides great features to speed up the viewing of recordings or skip the inactivity.
  • Easy options to share recordings to peers to show the exact spots to be reviewed.
  • Smartlook does not always capture the user email address when searching recordings, as such, we have to sift through many recordings to find the right one.
  • The filter options sometimes do not work, making it harder to find the exact recording you need.
  • Interface can be a bit clunky.
Smartlook is great for any business or company that is growing or starting up and may experience interface issues or glitches. It's a great tool to find and identify the issues to find a fix.

We use Smartlook to review customer behaviour and guide efforts to optimize user experiences. With Smartlook we are able to easily target specific user groups (power users, new users, etc.) as well as isolate recordings of specific workflows or events. Being able to watch how users interact with the system without setting up expensive experiments has allowed us to dramatically improve the product without spending a fortune. Additionally, we use Smartlook for customer support and as an aid to our development team in reproducing issues. We also use it to discover new, unreported issues.
  • Simple interface that is easy to grok and not intimidating to new users.
  • Handy dashboard that surfaces key information in an easy to digest manner.
  • Allows our team to filter recordings by pre-defined and custom data metrics so it's never hard to find the recordings you're after.
  • It's quite memory intensive and if you're in it for awhile it can become slow.
  • Doesn't work well on iPad or iPad Pro which is unfortunate since a lot of our product team prefer to consume on their iPad.
Smartlook is indispensable when it comes to understanding how users are interacting with your product. It is also our #1 tool for tracking down issues that come in through our support channels. The days of long email threads, or screen sharing sessions to reproduce an issue are long gone and we are never looking back.

It is being used to review reported bugs from users or our team, gather requirements or user data, and review technical concerns related to our e-commerce site. It's helpful for determining user patterns across various features.
  • Record user sessions.
  • Identify rage clicks.
  • Select different pages or URLs you want to review activity from.
  • Setting up flags that you're looking to track and saving those events for later review.
  • Easier navigation to share video clips with colleagues.
Smartlook is great for capturing SaaS data or e-commerce data alike. I've found the most success using Smartlook to review possible technical issues or bugs that appear on our site, as well as review user frustrations and "bounce"-type events that occur from users. It's helpful to better understand and watch first-hand how users interact with our site and gather research and requirements for features that we are thinking about implementing.

Smartlook is currently being used to evaluate and test the design and functionality of our website. It helps us test and identify what features are working or not.
  • Recordings are pretty easy to view and use.
  • Smartlook's website is pretty simple and intuitive.
  • User management on Smartlook's website works well.
  • Heat maps can use some improvement.
Smartlook does a great job of evaluating the U/X. However, it's best to use this tool to complement other tools. For example, Smartlook itself can't explain why your bounce rate is high.

Smartlook helps us understand users' behaviors and the good points and what needs improvement of our application. It is also an incredible tool for supporting our users. Looking at a user's session is worth more than a hundred messages exchanged over a support ticket. The ability to go and look for a specific user and session helps us understand what the user is going through and fix issues before they get mainstream.
  • Record user sessions.
  • Index user's metadata for later research.
  • Heatmap of user's behaviors in the app.
  • Analytics is lacking compared to competitors.
Smartlook is particularly well suited for tracking a user's session and providing help when supporting them by looking at an issue directly as it happened on their phone.

It is used by many in the organization. With Smartlook, we can discover bugs, problems and get a better feeling of what kind of users we have on our page. We can see hotspots on pages and filter out different users. Based on this information, we can make our page better every day because we know what and where to look.
  • Page speed.
  • Heatmaps.
  • Options to filter.
  • Error reading.
  • To pin/save users that are important.
We used a few sites that are like Smartlook, but I'm positive that they are in front of their competitors. Really nice user experience and design. The page is user-friendly and easy to navigate. So far, no problems accrued with Smartlook. A cool feature is where you have active sessions of users, which comes in handy when you deploy a new version. You can see if everything is working for the users.

Smartlook is being used to address UX and product development questions around how our app is being used, whether users are able to onboard and utilize features appropriately, whether bugs or issues are arising that make the app less usable, and how we can improve flow and UX based on user interaction with the app.
  • [It] helps show trends in usability.
  • Highlights trends in frequency of use, which is wonderful, because we want users to return to our app and engage.
  • Highlights any issues in onboarding or usability so that we can stay agile and adjust anything we need to right away.
  • Some recordings I've seen have started when the user is already logged in, so I missed the log-in process.
  • I would like to have more visibility into what users are typing so that I can see if they are filling in information the way I would hope.
  • I would like to have more identifying information so that I can reach out to users and assist them with issues or help them improve their profiles on our app.
Smartlook is really great if you want to have visibility into how users are utilizing your app or service, especially in places where there is confusion. We have made small adjustments, such as freezing our filter bar so that users don't endlessly scroll and then have to scroll back up to filter. It's less helpful if you want to see personal information or how users input text.

[As] a web designer I was looking for this simple, but useful tool for years! Makes it easy for you to understand your website visitors' behavior for FREE. Their new Heatmaps are also very simple and easy to use, even for mobile devices and tablets.
  • Digital analytics.
  • Heatmap tool.
  • Session replay.
  • There are a lot of recordings on my website, so it would be nice to have some of them recommended.
I can see my website through the customer's eyes which helps reveal the mistakes and find what to improve!

We use Smartlook to analyze user behavior on the web, tracking how users browse and interact with websites. We value the visualization of browsing down to the level of one specific user.
  • Visualization.
  • Online tracking.
  • Free account.
  • Heatmaps.
  • Recording of user interactions.
  • Browsing stored records.
  • Records categorization.
  • Permanent storage.
Smartlook is very useful if we want to visualize the interaction on the web. For detailed behavioral analysis, a tool like Google Analytics is more suitable.

Smartlook is being used mainly by the design team to look for bugs and experience issues that may be affecting our final user. The company is great at having quantitative data, but we don't have enough qualitative insights to make decisions. Since one of our star metrics for the next quarter is to improve the user experience, we hope that Smartlook will help us to find out what could be better and how is it affecting the user.
  • The dashboard with the main insights.
  • Support by e-mail.
  • Filter by specific behaviors (e.g. Rage Click).
  • Events -- but I think this is something that we could improve ourselves in our system.
  • Create some suggestions for funnels and heatmaps.
  • Give general insights for a certain period of time, e.g. from Oct. 7th to 12th, 75 users left the checkout step and 60% of them left due to a payment issue. IDK just bringing some ideas!
  • Send an e-mail with main insights.
The sales team is very patient and helpful, and since we come from a non native English country, it was great to have someone on the other side being patient and helping us with so many questions. This is already a good reason to recommend the service for someone. But the product itself is good if your company only uses Google Analytics, MixPanel or similar, because this will give you another perspective from the use. There are some errors or fraud attempts that are not traceable by other platforms, but tools like Smartlook can give you a hit on what's going on. On the other hand, if the company is not looking to improve the user experience, this may be not appropriate for you.

  • Mobile apps analysis.
  • Segmentation setup.
  • Continuous tracking.
  • Cookies integration.
Very good for one off analysis. For small to medium size companies it's a must have to get at least some data once in a while. For continued measurements it could get pricey, depending on your traffic. I like the function to have a personalized dashboard with data you need.

In our company, we use Smartlook mainly in the marketing area to identify the origin of new leads and their behavior on our website. Occasionally, we also use it to see how our website adapts to different browsers. We analyze the behavior of our visitors and find possible flaws in the interface of our website, in this way we adjust and make improvements in real-time.
  • Identify the origin of new leads.
  • Highlighting possible UX design flaws.
  • Display actual customer behavior.
  • Identifying users.
  • The way in which it displays visit data.
  • The way in which it sometimes identifies events.
Smartlook is perfect if you want to know the real behavior of the users on your website. Smartlook is ideal if you want to track additional information like what you get from platforms such as Google Analytics. It is great if you want to create funnels and see where you can optimize.

Smartlook is used primarily by our marketing and IT departments to review user sessions on pages where we are testing, or when there is a customer complaint about a site issue and we want to see what actions they took on the site to cause or trigger the issue.
  • Capture user sessions.
  • Allow filtering for captured sessions.
  • Save filters to reference in the future.
  • Easily create heatmaps.
  • Allow for heatmaps on different views of the page.
  • Filter by a specific action taken.
  • More session recordings before capping.
Smartlook is great for looking up a particular customer's session to see why they had an issue with the site. If someone had difficulty with a specific site feature or functionality, you can look up their session to see if it was a user error or a site error. You can also look at specific pages to see how customers are interacting with those pages in general. It's less appropriate without a purpose because you could spend all day just watching sessions to see what people do. It can be helpful but it is time-consuming.

Smartlook is used by the Product team and punctually by developers. We use it to understand some bugs reported by our users and to understand how our users interact with the app and how we could improve it. It is really useful for us and allowed us to solve issues.
  • Recording of the users sessions.
  • Locating the users.
  • Anonymizing the users.
  • The possibility to easily add a recorded session as favorite.
  • The possibility to classify the users (for example, by type of device).
  • The possibility to see advanced statistics.
I think Smartlook is the only tool to record user sessions so easily for an app. For example, looking at the sessions can help you identify a button that is not clear for your users or an action that they never do because they don't understand. Another scenario is when a user tells you he/she has a problem, and you can exactly see what user journey brought him/her to the problem to solve it quickly.

Smartlook is our central tool when making UX optimization decisions for our landings through A / B Testing. It provides complete and relevant information about navigation, clicks and behaviors that help us maximize conversion. It is used by both the marketing area, to define the contents that it places in each section of the web, and the programmers, to understand the flows of use of the products and improve the experience.
  • Click tracking.
  • Heatmap for mobile experience.
  • Website viewing percentage.
  • It is not easy to understand what data the heatmaps are built with.
The free version is extremely useful for starting projects, like ours, it allows you to understand the behavior of your users and make improvements based on real usage information and not only on what we think may be best for the client. We have no experience with the paid version, but it seems very complete in terms of its functionality.

Smartlook is absolutely fundamental to our company for checking what the visitors of our website are more interested in and the amount of time they are spending on each page.
  • Provides complete data about our visitors' actions.
  • Checks possible issues and errors.
  • Sees which pages customers spend the most time on.
